UK Supermarkets Rationing Lettuce – Report

Today’s story highlight shows one of the major issues the agriculture industry is still struggling to solve – year-round food security.

Flag of the United KingdomBad weather in Spain has taken a toll on the iceberg lettuce crop, leading UK supermarkets including Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco to limit customers to three heads each. Overall EU vegetable production is down significantly, and grocers have also seen shortages of broccoli, eggplant and zucchini.

“… other businesses (such as cafes and restaurants) are experiencing shortages and we have seen some bulk buying in our stores. We have therefore had a cap on sales of broccoli and iceberg lettuce to ensure we maintain good supplies for our regular customers…”
